Baker’s offers presenting donors sweet reward for life-saving gift this Memorial Day weekend

OMAHA, Neb. (May 18, 2009) – In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the American Red Cross is offering blood donors the chance to donate blood in honor of a loved one. To show gratitude for these donors’ life-giving generosity, three Omaha metro Baker’s Supermarkets will provide all presenting donors on Sunday, May 24 with a free cherry pie.

On any given day, more than 38,000 blood donations are needed for patients throughout the United States. The Red Cross reminds eligible individuals that the need for blood doesn’t take a vacation and encourages eligible individuals to make blood donation part of their summer plans.

“Blood drives at high schools and universities account for about 20 percent of blood donations made through the Red Cross,” said Tricia Rubens, CEO of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region. “With school out of session during the summer, it’s especially important for people to donate blood.”

Celebrate summer and give the gift of life. When you give blood, you can help save lives. The hour it takes to give could mean a lifetime to somebody else. Make an appointment to donate blood today and change a life, starting with your own.

While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
